Courtyard at 8 Rue Juiverie - Gallery by Philibert Delorme

This inner courtyard features a gallery designed by local architect Philibert Delorme in the sixteenth century. It is a rare example of Italian Renaissance architecture in Lyon!
Built in 1536 for Antoine Bullioud, Controller-General of Finances, this gallery was strongly influenced by Italian Renaissance art. It was the work of young architect Philibert Delorme, following his return from an apprenticeship in Italy.

The owner wanted a gallery linking up the two buildings, while leaving the fountain below intact.
The architect therefore came up with a system of elevation on squinches, which are masterpieces of stone carving.
The classical capitals and Roman-style friezes are of the Italian Renaissance style.

It is one of the only remaining examples of the work of Philibert Delorme, who went on to become the architect of King Henry II of France.
