CHATEAU DE COMMEQUIERS

Description

The château is currently closed to the public as work is planned. Don't hesitate to come and enjoy the magnificent grounds, with their lovely walks and children's play area.
Built in the second half of the 15th and 16th centuries by Louis de Beaumont, Lord of Plessis-Macé in Anjou, Château de Commequiers, now owned by the commune, was, like most of the castles in Bas Poitou, dismantled by order of Cardinal Richelieu in 1628, 6 years after Soubise's defeat at Notre Dame de Riez and Saint Gilles. At the time, it belonged to the La Trémoille family, great Protestant lords. Throughout the Middle Ages, the lords of Commequiers exercised their administrative and jurisdictional influence over a vast territory.
Octagonal in shape, with its 8 towers linked by curtain walls, the castle is said to have been built on the model of the Bastille.
The new "Théo et le secret du Château" treasure hunt is on sale (€3 for up to 3 children) at tourist information offices in the Pays de Saint Gilles and at the Commequiers Vélorail. Suitable for children aged 8 to 13, it takes 45 minutes to complete on foot.
