First edition of the Festival rhénan de Strasbourg, a festival dedicated to classical music, reviving a long musical tradition.
Strasbourg boasts a long musical tradition. The Rohan cardinals, the prince-bishops of Strasbourg, maintained an orchestra almost as large as the king’s at Versailles.
It was in Strasbourg, in 1855, that the oldest permanent orchestra outside of Paris was founded.
It was also in Strasbourg that the first music festival in France was established in 1932, succeeding the Fêtes musicales d’Alsace-Lorraine of the German imperial period. After enjoying considerable prestige, however, it disappeared from Strasbourg’s musical and cultural landscape some ten years ago.
Music lovers, professional and amateur musicians alike, missed this festival.
This is why the Festival rhénan was launched, as a citizen-led and voluntary initiative.
It offers music lovers a high-quality programme, performed by top-class musicians.
