Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne

The only commune in the Dordogne to belong to our Communauté de Communes, Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne has a significant heritage, as it is home to the château of the famous Renaissance humanist Michel Eyquem, better known as Michel de Montaigne.

Among Montaigne's contemporary remains is the 16th-century tower in which he wrote his Essais. Opposite, a 19th-century château, built by Napoleon III's Minister of Finance, preserves the splendor of that era.
