The Park of Locastel has not always been this quiet or green with its massive trees just waiting the be sat under. Little less than 50 years ago, life here was punctuated by the sound of sirens calling processions of workers to the hard labour of the ironworks, that produced a steady stream of molten metal ingots.
The huge building (about 100 meters long) you are looking at dates from 1872. It used to house the galvanizing workshop. This is where sheets of steel were coated with a layer of zinc to protect them from corrosion.
A little further along the Blavet, were the old rolling mills where the steel ingots passed between cylinders to become thin metal plates, shaped, printed and destined to become small cans for the fish canneries, such as sardine, which flourished on the Lorient coast, and which were hungry consumers of “tin plate”. Although the place is now peaceful and restful, 100 years ago the noise was perpetual and deafening.
