A former fief and seigneury, the Château des Forges originally had the characteristics of a fortified house rather than a monumental castle. Although the exact date of its construction remains uncertain, the site may have been a stopover for the Knights Templar, particularly on the route between Laval and Santiago de Compostela. The discovery of shards of partridge-eye pottery supports this hypothesis.
The destruction of the site is thought to have occurred around 1620. Since 1993, archaeological research campaigns have enabled the ruins of the castle to gradually reappear, revealing its original layout and form.
Today, the association Les Amis du Château is responsible for maintaining and safeguarding the site. Guided tours, introductions to archaeology, demonstrations of medieval combat and fouée meals are available all year round, by prior arrangement.
