A draughtsman and master engraver, he engraved many French stamps. In 1900, he won the 1st Second Grand Prix de Rome de Gravure and in 1926, the Médaille d'honneur de la Gravure at the Salon des Artistes Français.
Antonin DELZERS was born in Castelsarrasin on August 17, 1873, into a modest family on rue de la Justice.
His aptitude and passion for drawing led him to the Ecoles des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and Paris.
In 1900, he was awarded the 1st Second Grand Prix de Rome (engraving section) and a government travel grant, then in 1926, the Médaille d'Honneur de la Gravure at the Salon des Artistes français for Jordaens' "Les Quatre Evangélistes".
Official state engraver for postage stamps, he also worked as a drawing master at the Ecole Polytechnique.
His Parisian life as an artist and teacher did not allow him to forget his home town, where he made frequent trips. When he retired, he returned to settle permanently in Castelsarrasin, in the 18th-century mansion inherited by his wife, Louise FILHOL. Some of his works are on display in the museums of Montauban, Toulouse and Carcassonne, and in the Cabinet des Estampes at the Louvre. The finesse, perfection and precision of his strokes make his productions (postage stamps, portraits, paintings) true works of art.
A painter and portraitist, many of his works bear witness to the artist's deep attachment to his native town.
