The synagogue was built in 1867, in sandstone, by the architect Antoine Ringeisen. At the time of its construction, the Jewish community in Mackenheim numbered about 130 people. It declined rapidly after the Second World War, from 56 members in 1936 to 4 in 1953. In the 1970s the former synagogue was converted into a library and MJC.
