Commandant Philippe Kieffer will be remembered for his key role in the Normandy Landings.
At the head of a 177-strong commando unit, the only French soldiers to take part in the D-Day landings (1st Battalion of Fusiliers Marins Commandos, later to become the famous Bérets Verts), he landed on Sword Beach, at Colleville-Montgomery. Despite significant losses, he reached his objective, albeit wounded, and was instrumental in the liberation of Ouistreham.
After the war, the Lieutenant-Commander settled in Grandcamp-Maisy. He became a general councillor and then a member of parliament in 1946.
He lies facing the sea in the Grandcamp-Maisy cemetery.
