Monument à Jeanne d'Arc

_ANG8763
Le monument Jeanne d'Arc Bonsecours

Description

In the Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours Basilica square, the Joan of Arc Monument towers above the river Seine. It was decided to build a monument to pay tribute to Rouen's heroine in 1868 thanks to a group of artists and local officials and numerous donations. But there wasn't much space left in Rouen, it was thus built in Bonsecours. The symbolism is even stronger, since the statue overlooks Rouen and embraces the whole city of her martyrdom, overlooking the castle Keep where she had been locked up, Saint-Ouen Abbey Church, where she renounced, the Archbishop's Palace where she was tried, the Old Market Square where she was burnt and the river Seine where her ashes were scattered.

A Remembrance site in the hills above Rouen:
The Norman architect Juste Lisch designed this Renaissance Revival monument. Its terrace is home to 4 sheep, which seem to be watching over their shepherdess. The central pavilion is composed of pillars bearing a cupola and a lead and gilt copper bell tower made by Ferdinand Marrou, a famous skilled metal worker. The cupola is topped by a statue of St. Michael slaying the Dragon in gilt bronze, made by Gabriel-Jules Thomas. Under the cupola are the names of the main towns that had an influence on Joan of arc's life: Domr‚my, Orl‚ans, Reims, Paris, CompiŠgne and Rouen.

In the heart of the shrine the monumental but harmonious statue of Joan of Arc, made by the sculptor Louis Ernest Barrias, stands 2 metres high. It is flanked by the statues of Sainte Marguerite and Sainte Catherine, who were given to Joan of Arc by God as advisors through the intermediary of the Archangel Saint Michael. The main structure of the monument itself contains a chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame-des-Arm‚es. The memorial was listed a Historic Monument in 1986 and was inaugurated on 30th June 1892 with a large crowd of 50,000 people led by three archbishops and fourteen bishops.
