Barfleur was one of the Channel's most important ports in the Middle Ages.
With its lovely granite houses and location at the end of the Cotentin peninsula, this picturesque little port has attracted many artists, painters and writers.
Paul Signac was one of them. He lived here from 1932 to 1935, in a house opposite the church of Saint-Nicolas, now marked by a plaque.
The artist was passionate about the sea and owned several yachts. He produced a major series of watercolor paintings of French ports, including Barfleur.
