Eglise Saint-Nicolas

Eglise St Nicolas Beaumont_OT
Credit : Office de Tourisme Bernay Terres de Normandie

Description

On the banks of the river Risle, in Normandy, visit Saint Nicolas' Church and learn more about its thousand-year-old history.
Destroyed by a fire during the 15th century, restored in a Renaissance style, with Classical additions from the 17th century, bombed during the Second World War, this Norman church has been restored in 1951. Inside, admire the 16th century and the modern stained-glass windows. The most beautiful part of the church is the bell tower dating back to the 16th century. Nestled in the bell tower, Regulus, the Roman soldier automaton, symbol of the given word, has been striking the bells every hour from 1826 to 2017. The 20th century stained-glass windows were made by Max Ingrand, one of the most famous post-war stained-glass artists. Saint Nicolas' church houses statues coming from the three former churches of Beaumont-le-Roger. Information panels are placed to help visitors identify them. Information about the stained-glass windows is available at the Tourist Information Centre. The 20th century pipe organ is the same as the one in Notre-Dame de la Couture Basilica in Bernay: it is possible to hear it played during the choir lessons on Tuesdays from 3.30 to 5.00 pm.
