Jean Baptiste Lecreps, a doctor from Vaucluse, who, after treating many people, fell seriously ill in 1826. He promised to build an oratory for the Virgin Mary if he recovered. Following his recovery, he bought a plot of land in the commune of Le Reculey, on the road leading from Vire to Caen. The modestly sized chapel (6 m x 4 m) was inaugurated in July
1828. Doctor Lecreps died in 1841, and was buried beside the chapel.
As the years went by, the pilgrimage grew, to the point where the chapel became too small. In 1871, on the appointment of Monseigneur Hugonin, Bishop of Bayeux/Lisieux, Abbé Vengeon became parish priest of Le Reculey. He decided to build a new sanctuary, the first stone of which was laid on August 18, 1874. The following year, Doctor Lecreps' statue of the Virgin Mary was installed in the new building.
Outside the chapel, 6 statues of saints complete this magnificent architectural ensemble
