Standing proud, looking skywards, the ebb and flow of the sea at its feet, ‘The Brave’ a monumental sculpture splits the waters, where some 35,000 GIs set foot on French soil early on the morning of D-Day, the 6th of June 1944.
Its steel sails sparkle under the sun-kissed shores of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, codenamed Omaha Beach. Inaugurated on the 5th of June 2004, for the 60th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, this exceptional 15 metre-long and 9 metre-high sculptural ensemble, created by the French artist Anilore Banon, offers a striking break to the horizon. Comprised of three parts, including ‘Rise freedom’, surrounded by ‘The Wings of Hope’ and ‘The Wings of Fraternity’, The Brave statue pays homage to the courage of the soldiers who came to liberate France and, more generally speaking, the world.
