The grotte de l'ermitage (hermitage cave) dates from the Neolithic period, and the 12th-century Romanesque chapel of Notre-Dame de Laval.
Occupied over the course of time by different peoples and associated with various mysteries, rites and beliefs.
The site witnessed the first beginnings of Christianity, with Saint Veredemus occupying the site in the 7th century. The Hermitage was born.
In the 12th century, Christianity made its mark on the site, consecrating it and building the chapel.
Hermits occupied the site successively and alternately, and hid there during the French Revolution.
In the twentieth century, still deeply imbued with religion, processions were very popular to ward off the misfortunes of war and disease, or to ask for rain and good harvests; more recently, during and after the difficult times of the Second World War.
With the disappearance of processions, the site fell into disuse, more or less ruining it and its surroundings. Renovation work, however, saved the site.
Nowadays, although the religious aspect has faded, the solemnity and harmony remain, generating a confidential but quality tourism that is totally respectful of the site.
Free of charge.
