The Chapel of the Grey Penitents was built in the early 17th century, and features a magnificent altarpiece that can be viewed during opening hours.
The chapel of the Pénitents Gris in Aigues-Mortes, founded around 1400, occupies the site of a former convent of Cordeliers monks donated by Louis IX in 1248. These Cordeliers were at the origin of the Confrérie des Pénitents Gris, a religious brotherhood dedicated to charity and prayer.
Its façade, in pure Louis XIV style, is elegant and imposing. Today, the chapel is a symbol of the spiritual heritage of Aigues-Mortes, and remains an important place of worship and remembrance.
Free of charge.
