Religious buildings suffered during the Wars of Religion.
The cathedral was destroyed twice and rebuilt on the ruins. There are elements of the 11th-century Romanesque church (frieze, tower, wall sections), 17th-century neo-Gothic architecture and 19th-century renovation.
Don't miss the medieval frieze of the first cathedral.
September 29, 1567: the story of the Michelade at Saint Castor Cathedral. Catholics were thrown into the well in the bishop's courtyard on the side of the cathedral, and Protestant rioters attacked the cathedral, attempting to destroy the bell tower. The Cathedral underwent two renovations: the first from 1877 to 1882 by architect Henri Revoil, and the second and last in 1904. Of the original 11th-century building, the façade and a bas-relief Old Testament suite remain. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and remodeled internally in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. Remarkable 17th-century organs, a Gallo-Roman sarcophagus and paintings by local masters stand side by side. The church was consecrated in 1096 by Pope Urbain II and Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse and Count of Nîmes.
