Oppidum celto-ligure de Saint-Marcel

Oppidum celto-ligure de Saint-Marcel

Description

"An oppidum, in ancient times designated a kind of citadel, a fortified natural eminence and therefore suitable for defense."
"Among the oppida established in Ligurian Provence is the highly strategic one at Saint-Marcel. The site on the Baous de Saint-Marcel plateau covers three hectares at an altitude of 167 meters: it occupies a platform protected by steep cliffs on the south and west sides, with the land sloping steeply to the north. The oppidum was built like a fortified village. Dwellings were erected close together. The floors were made of clay-bound pebbles, and the streets were very narrow. The presence of springs at the foot of the cliffs also explains the choice of this location, and at least one well was established in this fortified enclosure, which offers us the finest visible archaeological site in Marseille after the remains of the Bourse."
H. Hardouin.
It was listed as a historic monument on August 23, 1990.
