The village of Mervent has been awarded the "Station Verte" label.
A little history... the castle, a major witness to Mervent's medieval past, dates from the 12th or 13th century and, according to legend, was built by the fairy Mélusine. Today, the ramparts and other towers can still be seen.
Mervent takes its name from the Celtic "Maro Vidua": the Great Forest. This omnipresent forest still covers 45% of the commune.
The village, perched on a rocky outcrop surrounded by "La Mère", lies at the heart of the Mervent-Vouvant Forest.
Leisure activities in the commune :
- the Mervent leisure centre and its water sports activities on the lake
- Natur'Zoo in Mervent
- the Pierre-Brune amusement park
- and numerous mountain biking, walking and horse-riding trails in the forest.
