In the Middle Ages, the village of L'Île-d'Elle was part of the parish of Marans. In 1655, L'Île-d'Elle was established as a parish by the Bishop of La Rochelle and the chapel of the former Saint-Hilaire priory officially became the parish church.
It was completely rebuilt between 1847 and 1852 in a neoclassical style and consecrated by the Bishop of Luçon. Hit by lightning, the bell tower was rebuilt in 1871 to plans by Yonnais architect Victor Clair. The building's vaults are made of wood.
