Eglise Saint-Pierre

Description

The church of Tresses, dedicated to Saint Peter, is an imposing edifice. Built in the Romanesque period and originally comprising a simple nave and flat chevet, it is characterized by its powerful fortified bell tower, built in the 13th century and resembling a square tower. With its thick walls, parapet walk, crenellations and merlons, corner watchtowers on the buttresses and a hoarding, this sturdy bell tower was an unrivalled defensive shelter and lookout post for the surrounding area.
Extended with side aisles in the 16th and 19th centuries, the church underwent major restoration work in 1838. The present belfry was built in 1877.
