Such is France in the summer of 1789. Until one night, in Versailles, everything changed. It was the Night of 4 August 1789.
It was a State in chronic deficit, where the richest people escaped taxation. A regime on its last legs. A people at the end of their tether, demanding justice and seeing nothing of it. A rich but stalled country, prey to the vagaries of a dysfunctional climate. Such was France in the summer of 1789. Until one night, in Versailles, everything changed. It was the Night of 4 August 1789.
Hugues Duchêne launches into an adaptation of Bertrand Guillot's historical novel L'abolition des privilèges. On stage, a virtuoso solo in a set-up close to the audience, for a sprint that gives the feeling that History has suddenly accelerated. And some surprising resonances with today's history.
