The Loir rises in St Eman in the Eure-et-Loire region, a few kilometres from Chartres. It travels 200 kilometres before joining the Sarthe and Mayenne rivers to form the Maine, which in turn flows into the Loire.
It is a noble river that has been recounted by many writers, including Ronsard, Du Bellay, Descartes, Balzac and Proust.
The river has not been navigable since 1954.
Fishing is the main activity.
Numerous dams regulate the course of the river.
Only canoes can travel down the river.
