Also known as the “small channel” or “petit canal,” it is 21.3km long (about 13 miles) and was built from 1833 to 1836 so as to maintain a constant water level in the Nantes – Brest Canal. It is fed by the Vioreau reservoir. It goes underground for 600m (nearly 650yd) and also flows through 4 aqueducts. Many small stone bridges span the channel. Its banks provide shady paths among magnificent trees and very diverse flora.
