Discover the Parc Oriental de Maulévrier, Europe's largest Japanese garden, in the south of Maine-et-Loire. An unusual and serene stroll awaits you, between symbolism and Japanese art, where the beauty of the landscape is sure to fill you with wonder. From mid-March to mid-November, the park is transformed, offering a variety of colours and scents - it's impossible to choose a favourite season.
Recognised by the Michelin Green Guide, the park is "well worth a visit" and was awarded its second star in 2016. Enjoy the tea room, the bonsai exhibition in the Pavillon des Plantes, and the souvenir shop.
New area: Sunset Island
Conceived as an extension of the Japanese landscape created by Alexandre Marcel, this island was designed with the expertise of Eijiro Fujii, Emeritus Professor at Chiba University. Located to the west, near the viaduct, it symbolises the meeting of East and West, evoking the path of the sun. Its banks offer new perspectives and invite contemplation, for a soothing pause in the middle of the journey.
Exceptional days
The park offers a wide range of activities throughout the year, including bonsai pruning, ikebana (Japanese floral art) and kyudo (traditional archery) classes. Not-to-be-missed events include "Hanami", a picnic under the cherry trees in March, "Bonsai Shō" in June, "Kamiplay", a meeting between a Japanese garden, photographers and cosplayers in July, "Painters in the Garden" in August, "The Arts of Japan" in September, "Les Musicales du Parc" in October, and "Momiji" in November.
Guided tours are organised every Sunday and public holiday at 2.30pm (excluding event days), from mid-March to mid-November.
A magical night-time experience
From May to September, the park also reveals itself at night, in a magical atmosphere. Carrying a lantern, you can wander around the edge of the pond, lulled by Japanese stories, and admire the spectacular reflections and lighting. It's an evening not to be missed!
