St Roch’s Chapel was built in 1450 by Alain IX de Rohan to ward off the Black Death, which was ravaging the region.
This chapel, the last in Blain, was the seat of the Château’s brotherhood.
Built on a megalithic hillock (the ‘Petit Roc Fou’), like most sacred sites in Brittany, it Christianised a sacred Druidic site.
Constructed in accordance with the rules of the builders’ guild, it faces west-east.
The door faces west, towards the setting sun; it opens onto the shadows, the realm of the dead, leading eastwards towards the chancel, the light, and the sacred space where the Divine Liturgy is celebrated.
