This is a fine example of 17th-century architecture, beautifully set against a backdrop of a large reflecting pool, moat and surrounding woodland and gardens. In 1793, it served as a refuge for the royalists of the Vendée, particularly General Charette, who held receptions in the reception room. Denys de la Patelière filmed the movie *Le Tonnerre de Dieu* there, starring Jean Gabin.
