The exhibition tells the story of Jacques Cathelineau, a simple hawker and pedlar during the French Revolution.
You'll find out what life was like in the Mauges at the time, who Jacques Cathelineau was, his involvement in the Vendée War and the key events of that war after his death.
With the surprising history of the statues in Le Pin-en-Mauges and the museum, you'll also learn how the village has perpetuated the memory of its illustrious child.
Each panel is complemented by "Find out more" sheets that you can consult on site or by scanning the QR codes at the bottom of the panels.
An area devoted to the memory of the Vendée wars in Le Pin-en-Mauges (lists of Le Pin's inhabitants who died in the war, list of Cathelineau family members who took part in the fighting) and another area dedicated to the descendants of Jacques Cathelineau complete this series of panels.
Finally, the showcases display various objects and documents relating to Jacques Cathelineau (in particular his wedding ring, a piece of his shirt stained with his blood, his reliquary cross), his era and that of his children.
The Cathelineau Museum is open on request from the Town Hall, or from volunteers outside Town Hall opening hours. After booking, a volunteer from APEC (Association Patrimoine Et Culture) will accompany you on your visit.
To complete your visit to the museum, head to the nearby church of St Pavin to admire the series of stained glass windows which, in the style of a comic strip, recount the episodes in the public life of Jacques Cathelineau and illustrate the memory of the main chiefs of the Vendée.
Depending on the availability of volunteers, a guided tour of the stained glass windows may be offered.
