Description

Whether you are an art or history buff, a foodie or someone seeking new experiences, ‘Little Rome’ will surprise and intrigue you. The jewel in the crown of this rich heritage, the Ancient Theatre dominates the city and offers an ideal vantage point!
Majestic and steeped in history, the Ancient Theatre of Vienne never ceases to amaze.

Rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to extensive excavation and restoration work, this Gallo-Roman treasure rivals the greatest theatres of Rome. Its vast semicircular auditorium, with 46 tiers of seating, once accommodated up to 13,500 spectators.

Today, it still comes alive every summer during the famous Jazz à Vienne festival, which brings together nearly 8,000 enthusiasts in an exceptional setting, enhanced by recent restoration work completed in 2020. The venue harmoniously blends heritage and emotion for unforgettable evenings under the open sky.

From the tiers, the show doesn't stop there: a breathtaking panorama awaits you. The Rhône, the city, the terraced vineyards and the peaks of Mont Pilat paint a vivid and grandiose picture. Below, the remains of the Odeon, nestled at the foot of Mont Saint-Just, are a reminder of the cultural richness of ancient Vienne.

Then look north: the ruins of the Château de la Bâtie proudly dominate the Rhône from Mont Salomon. And for an even more spectacular view, head to the Mont Pipet viewpoint. Up there, bathed in light, you will be struck by the beauty of the red roofs, the gentle slopes of the Côte-Rôtie vineyards and the rolling horizon of the Pilat mountains.
