Off the coast of Loire-Atlantique's only island, in the open sea, stretches a field of sunflowers. This is the nickname given to the 200-hectare stretch of yellow floats overlooking the mussel farming area.
The Société familiale conchylicole de l'Île Dumet (SCID), run by the Brochard family, is one of three companies with concessions there. They were behind the takeover of the farm in 2008, and now own 73 hectares.
Coconut fibre ropes are covered with mussels. The larvae attach themselves to the bare ropes, which are suspended from catchment supports. These ropes are then installed on the rearing supports.
This production area off Dumet is the only area in the department where mussels are farmed. The company, which comes from Charente-Maritime, produces 450 tonnes of mussels a year. Two other companies operate in this area, one from La Turballe and one from Pénestin.
Enough to delight hundreds of consumers who love this bivalve with its black and gold shell and tasty flesh. Best enjoyed in the summer months!
