The Auberge Ste Catherine is closely linked to the name of François Viète (1540 - 1603). François Viète (1540 - 1603) was a famous mathematician, considered today to be the inventor of modern algebra, and an exemplary figure of Renaissance humanism. He was also a jurist and private adviser to the kings Henri III and Henri IV.
Named Sieur de la Bigotière after his father's death, he may have been born in the inn run by his family in the 16th century, or in the village of la Bigotière, or even in Fontenay-le-Comte...
