On July 10, 1940, when the defeat of the French armies was complete, only eighty members of parliament gathered in Vichy refused to grant Marshal Pétain, the "victor of Verdun", full constituent powers. Among them was Gaston Thiébaut, born in Samogneux and deputy mayor of Verdun. Gaston Thiébaut is buried in the Samogneux cemetery. In his honor, a street and a square bear his name.
In the village, by the side of the departmental road, you can see the statue of Père Barnabé, a character created by Henri Frémont in 1917. Père Barnabé is the archetypal Meuse peasant, uprooted and a refugee during the First World War.
