Mozart travelled to Bohemia at a very early age, guided by his father. At the age of 11, he composed his 6th symphony in Olomouc. The kingdom of Bohemia was renowned for its good wind instrument players.
In 1777, while composing his flute quartets, Mozart met several Bohemian musicians in Mannheim's famous orchestra, who impressed him. Later, Mozart's friendship with Anton Stadler, an excellent Bohemian clarinettist, gave rise to a quintet and then a concerto.
Stadler, who outlived Mozart, composed for the csakan, a cane flute that was very popular in Vienna in the early nineteenth century. Hugo Reyne imagines Stadler playing the works composed for him by Mozart on this new instrument.
