It is said that in the time of Charlemagne, a fortress already existed on this site, overlooking the old road to Brittany. The oldest remains uncovered during excavations date back to the 10th century. Among William?s companions on the conquest of England was Raoul 1er de la Pommeraye. This family, head of numerous possessions in England, founded the Abbey of Le Val, in the nearby parish of Saint-Omer. The castle and its site were developed until the 13th century, when they were abandoned. Its picturesque ruins, including the impressive porch tower, set amidst the woods, create a romantic atmosphere conducive to daydreaming and the birth of legends, including that of Mellia the blonde.
