The name, a little strange, of this commune finds its source in the regrouping of two communes. Lit, whose etymology is littus, the shore, would attest to the fact that the sea was much further inland a few centuries ago, when it is a little less than ten kilometres away today. Its twin, Mixe, is suspected to have been Mosconum, an ancient Roman city mentioned in the "Itinerary of Antoninus". Modestly known as "La Grande Dame du Marensin", Lit et Mixe and its Cap de l'Homy is a leading destination for many surfers and has built up a solid reputation over the years. The Cap de l'Homy is also home to "Anne-Marie", a pinnace that is still going strong at a time when her cousins have long since been used as firewood. It is a long boat traditionally used for fishing.
