Chevalements Cuvelette

Description

Mining in the coalfield came to an end in 2004, with the last extractions at the Houve shaft in Creutzwald. The headframes are today the last visual witnesses of this period of mining in the coalfield.
"The headframes are metal gantries that are located above the shafts. They support a huge pulley which drives the cage suspended from a cable..." which transported men and equipment "downwards" and brought the coal "upwards". "Their distinctive silhouettes remain the unwavering symbol of mining imagery." Ext. Passion Charbon_Ed. Serpenoise.
Sunk in 1930, the shafts at Cuvelette remained in operation until 1972.
After the closure, they were maintained for the ventilation of the Merlebach workings.
The Cuvelette South shaft, on the right, is the last concrete headframe in the coalfield and is listed as a historical monument.
The Cuvelette North shaft, made of metal, owes its preservation to the installation of telephone antennas.
