It was the place where women gathered once a week or more to exchange the latest village news. Nicknamed "radio washhouses", they often echoed with the chatter, laughter and even song of the washerwomen.
Laundries were gradually abandoned in the 20th century, to be replaced by washing machines in the 1950s. Today, they're more like heritage sites where you can linger while strolling, biodiversity reserves and places to cool off and relax.
