This small working-class housing estate is Caen's oldest (construction began in 1908). These were Caen's first HBMs (Habitations Bon Marché), the forerunners of low-cost housing.
This housing estate is what is known as a garden estate, where each tenant has a small
garden. In the spirit of the times, this garden was supposed to be a vegetable patch to improve the inhabitants? daily lives.
This little garden estate escaped demolition at the last minute, and has now been restored and listed as a historic monument.
