Thorrenc castle

Description

It was built in 1360 by the Cardinal of Dovecote. The Southeast tower, is of the 15th century. More modest buildings of Renaissance style were leaned.
This charming castle comprises three towers. The oldest appears to be the keep, a rectangular tower accessed at the first floor. Only a few narrow openings let light into the interior. The floors of the keep were entirely timber-floored. It is thought to have been built around 1360 by the Cardinal of Colombier, lord of the manor. The round tower to the south-east, with its horizontal arrowslits, dates from the 15th century. This tower contains dungeons. The third tower, which is more recent, is thought to date from the early 16th century. Buildings adjoining the keep form a Renaissance main residence. Another building was added or repaired at an even later date – in the 17th or 18th century…
As the seat of a barony, the castle’s history dates back to at least 1025. After the Revolution, it passed by inheritance to the Annoné families – the Desfrançais de l’Olme, Bechetoille and Marthoret – and then, following a sale, to the Annoné families Mignot and Lapize de Sallée. It appears to have been inhabited until around 1850–1860. It was then gradually forgotten and overgrown until the mid-20th century. The ruins were listed as a historic monument on 28 December 1950. Following another sale in 1964, it was restored and reoccupied. It has changed hands several times since then and is not open to the public.
