Maubec village

The white limestone is present everywhere in Maubec. It serves as a foundation for the old ramparts that surround the town. The village overlooks the valley Gimone.
White limestone is everywhere in Maubec. The ramparts, weathered by centuries of use, and St Orens Church are the highlights of Maubec, an ancient fortified town with picturesque narrow streets. A formidable defensive site, the village was the scene of fierce fighting on several occasions. During the Wars of Religion, the Protestants managed to enter the town through a breach opened by cannon fire in the chevet of the church. With its collapsed vaults and demolished bell tower, Maubec bore the scars of these clashes for a long time.
Take a look at the ogival doors, half-timbered houses, door knockers, stone sinks, pulleys and carved stones that line these picturesque, flower-filled streets.
Today, the ramparts and church are listed as ‘Historic Monuments’.
