THE DISTRICT OF CARANZA

THE DISTRICT OF CARANZA

Description

The Way continues along the avenida del Mar, bordering the estuary of Ferrol, to the Monasterio de San Martiño de Xuvia also called Monasterio do Couto, in the municipality of Narón.

The city of Ferrol first began to grow with the districts de Esteiro and Magdalena and the latter started to be built in 1771. This was followed by Recemil in the 1940’s. But Ferrol continued to grow thanks to its shipyards. In the decade from 1960 to 1970 the district of Caranza sprang up beside the sea and in a rural area which stands out for its high buildings. In the old days this area was a reserve of the monastery of St.Martiño de Xuvia. The nickname “Caranza” in unique in Galicia.

It was here that the new tenants arriving at the city settled, but especially people from the district of Esteiro which had been partially demolished in 1974 owing to its degradation. In the 1980’s it suffered the consequences of the severe crisis in the shipbuilding industry.

At present the presence a relationship with the sea can be seen in Caranza such as small vessels and ramps to take them onto land; also present is a relationship with agriculture by means of market gardens. There are also new cultural facilities and vast, green spaces and a promenade all along the coastline.

At Punta de Caranza you will find the small chapel of Santa María; in its atrium, beside the sea, there is a transept with symbols of the Passion in its shaft and the image of the Virgin of Mercy with her Son in her arms which a restauration in 1995 moved to the side where the Crucified Christ should have been.
