The Judes Camp Memorial

On the edge of the former camp, 2.5 km from the village of Septfonds, the Memorial invites visitors to understand, remember, and pass on this history (permanent exhibition on site). Extend your visit at La Mounière, the House of Memories, a scenographic exhibition space in the heart of the village.
In February 1939, the authorities selected a site known as Judes to establish a camp intended to gather Spanish Republican refugees, considered “undesirable foreigners.” Designed to operate for only a few months, the camp was not evacuated until August 1944, when it was liberated by the Resistance. It was destroyed in 1946.

During this period, people of different nationalities and destinies succeeded one another or lived side by side in the camp. In 1942, 297 men, women, and children identified as Jews were deported from the camp to Auschwitz.

The Memorial is located on the edge of the former camp. The original water tank, explanatory panels, and a reconstructed barrack at one-quarter the size of the 1939 buildings bear witness to the conditions of internment. The Memorial also features a permanent exhibition, an two immersive digital installation :
- The web app “Septfonds, One Camp, Many Memories” explores the history of the Camp de Judes through the stories of ten fictional characters interacting in an audio drama.
- The digital experience “Crossed Paths” retraces the journeys of Jules and Joseph Fainzang in the form of an interactive scrolling graphic narrative.
