Set off to discover the birthplace of the poet with soles of wind and the places where he grew up. Follow the guide to discover some of the graphic works on the route that bears his name. Today, Charleville is a city of undeniable cultural wealth, always paying tribute to its illustrious poet.
A precocious child and rebellious teenager, he wrote his first poems at the age of fifteen. He grew up without a father and under his mother's marked authority as "73 administrators in a leaden cap". He was a gifted young man, and rather docile on the surface!
Arthur Rimbaud was born in Charleville on 20 October 1854 and felt cramped for space during his adolescence. A small provincial town in the midst of industrial change, it was nevertheless on the fringes of the world of poetry, through which he thirsted for expression. In Charleville, Arthur Rimbaud received a number of prizes and nominations for his writing skills.
Through his travels and his tumultuous relationship with Paul Verlaine, he forged his legend. Today, he is an icon who is recognised and studied the world over.
