Château de Bazeilles, sometimes called ‘Château d'Orival’ or ‘Château Dorival’ after one of its owners, is an architectural masterpiece in the Louis XV style. Its design is distinguished by its elegance, refined sculptures, statues, pavilions, moat, parkland, dovecote and orangery.
The château was built between 1740 and 1750 by Louis La Bauche, a prosperous manufacturer from Sedan, who made it his summer residence. At the time, he also owned private mansions in Paris and Sedan. Although the identity of the architect remains unknown, it is known that he belonged to the Nancy school. Louis La Bauche, who became Seigneur engagiste of Bazeilles, was ennobled by Louis XV in 1769.
Inherited until 1899, the château changed ownership several times in the 20th century. Unfortunately, it was seriously damaged by fire in 1989. Over the years, it has welcomed such illustrious visitors as the Duke of Bouillon, Minister Calonne, the Rohans, Wellington, Tsar Alexander I, William I and the Emperor of Germany.
