A daring competitor, this pilot had become famous before the war for breaking various records (1st crossing of the Mediterranean by air, on 23 September 1913 in 7h58min). He volunteered in 1914 and was the first to set up firing through the propeller. After several victories in 1915 and a three-year captivity in Germany, he returned to the front in 1918. It was in air combat that Roland Garros lost his life over Saint-Morel on October 5.
