In Courtenay, this 15th-century fortified house, which has been awarded the ‘Patrimoine en Isère’ label, is emblematic of the fortified residences found in the Balcons du Dauphiné. Travellers seeking authenticity and places steeped in history are bound to be captivated.
Situated on the border between the Dauphiné and historic Savoie, this property is one of the many fortified houses that once served to defend the region, of which over a hundred have been recorded.
Carefully restored in keeping with its architectural character, it now offers three guest rooms with refined, understated décor, where the charm of the old stonework blends harmoniously with contemporary comfort.
The "Plumes" room features two 90 × 200 cm beds, which can be joined to form a king-size bed measuring 180 × 200 cm, as well as a fireplace, a desk and an en-suite bathroom with a toilet.
The family suite features a spacious living room with a piano, a fireplace and a sofa bed. The adjoining bedroom is furnished with a 160 cm double bed and a fold-out armchair providing an extra sleeping space.
A private bathroom with a walk-in shower completes the suite.
Converted from the attic space, the attic room is enhanced by its remarkable exposed roof timbers, which once supported a slate roof.
Located on the third floor, it features a 180 cm double bed, a 90 cm extra bed and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower and toilet.
Every morning, the owners serve a home-made breakfast in the dining room or on the terrace, weather permitting.
Situated close to the medieval towns of Crémieu and Morestel, hiking trails and numerous Special Areas of Conservation, the Maison forte de Courtenay is an ideal choice for heritage enthusiasts looking to stay in a property that epitomises the local landscape.
