Castle of « SalleBrune »

The fortified stone castle was rebuilt not far from its former feudal motte « à platea », which is remarkably well preserved, and is an example of the long-term occupation of a site at the crossroads of two famous roman roads : from le Montet to Montaigut-en-Combraille and from Chantelle to Néris-les-Bains, the latter being designated the « Voie Saint-Martin ». The castle is particularly notable for its keep: a large, tall round tower dating from the 13th and 15th centuries, and a 17th century reconstruction, all beautifully integrated into a remarkable hilltop setting with expansive views. It is the starting point for numerous walking trails through the countryside. The castle is currently under restoration. The castle offers one guest room within the castle and a newly renovated cottage for four people. Listed as a Historic Monument.
