Fontevraud-l'Abbaye

Description

The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the whole of the Loire Valley, is the undisputed treasure of the village. Founded in 1101, it was home to a unique mixed community led by abbesses for over six centuries. Today, it houses a dynamic cultural centre, a prestigious hotel and a Michelin-starred restaurant. Inside, you can admire the graves of the Plantagenets, including those of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart and Henry II.
As well as its abbey, Fontevraud-l'Abbaye charms visitors with its cobbled streets, tufa stone houses and flower-filled gardens. Take a stroll through the village and you'll discover beautiful traditional facades, craft shops and cafés where you'll want to linger.
