Description

The Pointe du But was the scene of many shipwrecks. In the 19th century, despite technical progress and improvements in maritime safety, ships were still largely dependent on the weather. Most accidents were caused by storms or lack of visibility due to fog. Fog makes ships blind but not completely deaf.

So the need to signal the Chiens Perrins reef with an audible signal became essential. The Ponts et Chaussées department therefore decided to build this horn at the Pointe du But in 1895. Disused in 2000, it was part of a complex navigation aid system. Restored by the Département during the winter of 2023-2024, it now houses an exhibition on the history of maritime signage on the Île d'Yeu.
