Located in Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef, l'Écrin de la Belle Étoile invites you to an unforgettable encounter with animals as gentle as they are intriguing: llamas and alpacas.
This small farm, created by Aurélie Chaintreau, is the only one of its kind in Loire-Atlantique and offers an authentic, educational experience.
A passion born of an encounter with Zorro, a llama
It was around fifteen years ago, while working for a horse dealer, that Aurélie first saw a llama. Seduced by the animal's proud appearance, she decided to take him in. Zorro, as she called him, became her first companion. Sadly, after a long life of 36 years, he passed away last winter. Today, Cupidon, an energetic breeding male, watches over the herd. "He lets the females give birth and defends his herd. Most breeders don't leave the male with the females to control the matings. I leave him, he's happier that way," explains Aurélie with tenderness.
From eco-grazing to wool
In just a few years, the Écrin de la belle étoile has grown. Today, 25 llamas and 8 alpacas share the pastures. Among them, Bowie, born last January, stands out for his minnow eyes. Aurélie normally names the llamas after gods and the alpacas after superheroes.
Llamas and alpacas aren't just beautiful creatures. They are also excellent ecopastures. Their pads protect them from fragile soils and they love brambles and thorny bushes. "They make rivers of poo, which makes it easier to maintain the land," explains the breeder. Aurélie also sells her animals, mainly males, for grounds maintenance and educational farms.
Alpaca wool, which is finer and more abundant than llama wool, is sent to a spinning mill to be made into balls. Aurélie's mother knits socks, hats, neckerchiefs and mittens from this wool.
It's a way of adding value to the work of my animals.
An educational trip to the land of alpacas and llamas
Passionate about these South American camelids, Aurélie will share her knowledge and passion with you on guided tours. You'll learn more about their way of life, their diet and their role in the ecosystem. Younger visitors will be able to stroke these peaceful creatures and ask all their questions.
Activities for children
L'Écrin de la belle étoile also offers fun and educational activities for children. They can take part in workshops on brushing, preparing food or creating objects from wool. These activities encourage the development of fine motor skills, patience and respect for animals.
